SMOG Calculator™
In 1969 Professor G. Harry McLaughlin devised SMOG, a formula to assess the
educational level needed to fully understand a text. It has been widely
used, particularly by health authorities such as the Veteran's Association.
Now WordsCount has programmed SMOG as a free online service, available to
all. Welcome to the SMOG Calculator.
And while SMOG (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook) is a formula for measuring grade level, the Calculator also tells you other things such as the number of words, letters, and sentences. SMOG Calculator also incorporates Syllable Counter, which uses a dictionary to look up the syllable length of words. Because of this, SMOG Calculator counts syllables more accurately than any other readability program.

Like the SMOG Calculator? You can put our analysis box on your own site, free of charge. All you have to do is put thirteen lines of code on your site. Your user then pastes his text in the box, pushes the "submit" button, and gets his text analyzed. It works exactly like it does on our site. Sound like fun? Give it a shot and click the link below to see the code. Of course, the service is subject to certain terms.
